We Need Your Input

We get many of our best ideas from people like you. Please read the items below that we are considering and let us know if you are interested in any of them.  Simply clicking on the link should send us an e-mail that is preformatted with the feedback.  You of course can add any more info you would like.

Read-Only Office Edition: We have had a suggestion submitted that we add a new "read-only" version of QuikCalc that allows people to connect to a QuikCalc Office installation and view the data, but not edit it.  This would be available at a discounted price due to the limited features.  Does this interest you?  Yes, this interests me!

Payment Coupon Paper: We have been asked by many if we supply the perforated paper to print QuikCalc Office Edition's Payment Coupons on.  If we offer this custom paper, would you be interested? Yes, this interests me!

1098 Form Generation: This seems to be a popular request, especially at this time of the year.  Does adding this to QuikCalc interest you? Yes, this interests me!  What about 1099-INT Forms? Yes, this interests me!

Loan/Schedule Emailing: We have had several variations on this theme.  One is to be able to e-mail loans or schedules to other QuikCalc users.  Yes, this interests me! The other is to be able to generate a PDF of a report and then e-mail it.  Yes, this interests me!

Multiple Database Support for Office Edition: Some people have multiple businesses and want to be able to keep their information separate.  Would you like to be able to have multiple databases within QuikCalc that keeps your data completely separate? Yes, this interests me!

These are just a few of the things we are looking at for the coming year.  Please let us know what interests you!  And if you haven't already, try the new version of QuikCalc and see how suggestions from people like you led to the most significant facelift QuikCalc has ever received that has people raving.  Then, upgrade to any edition, no matter what you owned before, for 50% off.  Just visit our secure order site.

What You're Missing If You Haven't Updated Your Software

We recommend that you update your software at least once a month.  You can do this easily by going to your Help menu and checking for updates.  For users who haven't downloaded an update lately, these are some of the things you could be missing out on:

  • When generating bi-weekly or weekly schedules, QuikCalc Home Edition will now automatically change the Day Count Convention to use Actual/360 instead of 30/360. All other editions will display a message recommending which Day Count Convention to use when changing the payment frequency.
  • Plus much more!

Tip Of The Month

This is a "general" computer tip as opposed to one specific to our products. Most of us have printed web pages before. Usually there is no problem with having the web address shown on the page but sometimes you want a "clean" print-out. This tip is something we stumbled upon just by accident. To get rid of what Internet Explorer puts at the top and bottom automatically, just go to the File menu, select Page Setup, and erase the text in the Header and Footer fields. Click Ok when done. Now your pages will print without the default text. To set them back to the "default", enter "w&bPage &p of &P" in the header and "&u&b&d" in the footer without the quotes.

Fun Fact

The Great Fire of Meireki

[Editor's Note: In no way do we mean to imply the following is "fun", simply interesting.] The Great fire of Meireki, also known as the Furisode fire, destroyed 60-70% of the Japanese capital city of Edo (now Tokyo) in 1657. It lasted for three days, and is estimated to have claimed over 100,000 lives.

The fire began on the eighteenth day of the year and spread quickly through the city due to hurricane force winds which were blowing from the northwest. Edo, like most Japanese cities and towns at the time, and like most of those in mainland East Asia, was built primarily from wood and paper. The buildings were especially dry due to a drought the previous year, and the roads and other open spaces between buildings were small and narrow, allowing the fire to spread and grow particularly quickly. Though Edo had a designated fire brigade, called the Hikeshi, it had been established only 21 years earlier, and was simply not large enough, experienced enough, or well-equipped enough to face such a conflagration.

On the second evening, the winds changed, and the fire was pushed from the southern edges of the city back towards its centre. The homes of the shogun's closest retainers, were destroyed as the fire made its way towards Edo castle, at the very centre of the city. Ultimately, the main keep was saved, but most of the outer buildings, and all of the retainers' and servants' homes were destroyed. Finally, on the third day, the winds died down, as did the flames, but thick smoke prevented movement about the city, removal of bodies, and reconstruction, for several days further.

On the 24th day of the new year, six days after the fire began, monks and others began to transport the bodies of those killed down the Sumida River to Honjo, a community a short distance outside the city. There, pits were dug and the bodies buried; the Hall of Prayer for the Dead was then built on the site.

And how did it all start? A Japanese priest set a kimono on fire because it carried bad luck. Talk about bad luck! The flames spread until over 10,000 buildings were destroyed and 100,000 people died. This week, 350 years ago.

Last Month's Puzzler Contest Answer

Last Month's Question

Kevin is 14 inches taller than George. The difference between Kevin and Richard is two inches less than between Richard and George. Kevin at 6'6" is the tallest. How tall are Richard and George?

Answer

If Kevin is 6'6" tall, George must be 5'4" tall, and Richard must be 6' tall because he is 6" shorter than Kevin and 8" taller than George.
